Missions

Imagined. Planned. Pursued.

Every mission begins with an idea: a celestial event, a rare alignment, a coordinate in time and space where something extraordinary will happen.

PhotoPills finds it: position, angle, timing. We prepare. We travel to it. Not to a place. To a moment.

True stories from the field

The plan. The moment. What reality delivered.

PhotoPills

Every mission starts here.

Every alignment calculated in advance. Known to the minute.

We all carry PhotoPills in the field. When the window opens, everyone knows where to stand.

The Masters

Not guides. Not instructors. Not tour leaders.

Photographers first. Obsessed with preparation. Generous with knowledge.

They help you prepare before the moment arrives. And shoot beside you when it does.

The Movement

Extraordinary moments happen every day. Most are never witnessed.

Every year, photographers travel to them — chasing the Milky Way over Namibia, the aurora over Iceland, a full moon over Patagonia, a sunrise no one else planned for. One purpose: find them, capture them.

Frequently asked questions

About the experience

What makes a PhotoPills Experience different from a photography tour?

Most photography tours take you to beautiful places and hope the light is good. PhotoPills Experiences are built the other way around. Every mission begins with a specific moment: a full moon rising through Reynisdrangar, the Milky Way arching over the Namib Desert, the sun aligning with the Dubai skyline at golden hour. PhotoPills can predict it to the minute. We find the moment first. Then we design the mission around it. The destination follows the moment, not the other way around.

What if the moment doesn't align?

It happens. Weather changes. Clouds arrive at 6:19pm. When the planned shot doesn't come together, we don't pack up and leave. We're photographers. There is always another frame worth taking. We shoot what reality offers, and sometimes that turns out to be the better story.

What happens when conditions change on the day?

Every mission has a Plan B. And a Plan C. Masters adapt in real time, adjusting positions, timing, and objectives as conditions evolve. What we never do is improvise without a plan. The backup was briefed before departure. When reality pushes back, we already know what to do.

Is the outcome guaranteed?

No. And we will never pretend otherwise. The preparation is guaranteed. The moment belongs to reality.

About the products

What's the difference between an Expedition, a Camp, and a Private Mission?

An Expedition is a group mission: twelve Photographers, two Masters, signature moments across extraordinary locations. Mission-first pace. You travel with a crew of people who share the same passion.

Camp is the largest gathering in the PhotoPills universe: sixty Photographers, twelve Masters, the PhotoPills team, one week, multiple mission windows every day, lectures, and the kind of connections that outlast the trip. The crew is not a side effect of Camp. The crew is the point.

A Private Mission is built entirely around you: your vision, your group, your timeline, your shot. No catalogue. No template. One mission designed from scratch around what you want to capture.

How do I know which format is right for me?

If you want to travel the world with photographers who speak the same language: Expedition. If you want to make connections with other photographers, the Masters and the PhotoPills team while learning and chasing legendary moments: Camp. If you have a specific shot in mind, a personal occasion, or you want the experience built entirely around you: Private Mission. If you're not sure, tell us what you're imagining and we'll help you find the right format.

Can I join an Expedition if I've never done one before?

Yes. Expeditions are not for the most experienced photographers, they're for the most committed ones. If you've been imagining a shot and you're ready to stop planning from the couch, you belong on an Expedition.

Can I join an Expedition as a couple?

Yes. Two spots, one mission: you'll be in the field together, pursuing the same moment, side by side. Some photographers do their best work with someone who understands why they set an alarm for 3am.

Your partner is always welcome to join the trip. While you're in the field, they'll have everything they need: private accommodation, exceptional food, and the kind of setting that makes the waiting feel like part of the experience.

For couples looking for something truly intimate, our Tuscany Expedition is designed with both of you in mind: a private villa, a private chef, and extraordinary light that rewards preparation as much as presence.

Can I bring my non-photographer partner on an Expedition?

Absolutely. Non-photographers join Expeditions all the time and have a great experience. While the group is in the field, they're free to join, explore on their own, or simply relax at the hotel. No obligations, no schedule to follow.

Just keep in mind that your partner occupies one of the twelve spots. The group is limited to twelve for a reason: it's the number that lets us deliver the best experience possible for everyone.

If you want something designed around both of you from the start, a Private Mission gives you that: built around your pace, your interests, and your shared experience.

Do you have experiences designed for families, honeymoons, and groups of friends?

Yes — through Private Missions. Every Private Mission is designed from scratch around the people going on it. A family with children who want to witness a total solar eclipse together. A couple on honeymoon who want a moment nobody will forget. A group of friends who have been talking about the Milky Way for years and are finally ready to go after it.

No template. No catalogue. You tell us who you are, what you want to capture, and what the occasion means. We build the mission around that.

Let's plan your Private Mission →

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible. The best missions fill months before departure. For Private Missions, the earlier you start the conversation, the more options we have to design around the right window.

How many people are in each Expedition?

Twelve Photographers maximum. Two Masters. That's not a commercial decision, it's a mission decision. Larger groups compromise position flexibility, group energy, and the quality of every interaction with the Masters. Twelve is the number that works.

About preparation

What level of photography experience do I need?

Enough to operate your camera in manual mode and understand basic exposure. Beyond that, what matters is commitment: to the preparation, the process, and the honest outcome. Masters will help you get the most out of every window regardless of where you are technically.

Do I need to use PhotoPills before joining?

It helps but it's not required. You'll learn how to use it on the mission, in the field, in real conditions, with Masters who use it every day. By the time you leave, you'll understand why the plan was built the way it was.

What gear do I need to bring?

Each Experience page includes a detailed gear list specific to the objective and destination. As a general rule: a camera you know how to use in manual mode, a tripod, warm layers regardless of the forecast, and the trinity of lenses: wide angle (14-24mm), mid range (24-70mm), and telephoto (70-200mm).

Will I learn how to use PhotoPills on the trip?

Yes. Planning sessions are built into every Experience, with live demonstrations of how the Masters built the mission you're about to attempt. You leave knowing how to plan your next mission independently.

About the Masters

Who are the Masters and how are they selected?

Masters are Photographers first. They're selected for temperament as much as talent: obsessed with preparation, generous with knowledge, genuinely fun to be around. The title is earned, not assigned. Every Master has led missions, failed missions, and come back. That's what qualifies them.

Meet all the Masters →

Will the same Master lead every session?

On Expeditions, two Masters lead the full trip together. On larger events like Camp, Masters lead specific mission groups. Every session has a Master present: someone who knows the plan, knows the position, and knows what to do when conditions shift.

About entry and booking

How do I make sure I don't miss an Expedition or Camp?

Join the priority access list. You'll be the first to know when a new Expedition or Camp opens, before we release spots to the public. Both fill fast. Priority access is the best way to secure your place.

Join the priority access list →

What is your cancellation policy?

We hope you never need it. But if you do:

If you cancel your spot, a fee may apply, equivalent to the cost of the Experience minus any savings if we fill your place with another participant. If we do fill it, we'll refund your payments minus a €300 administrative fee and any non-refundable costs from our travel partners.

If unavoidable or extraordinary circumstances at the destination significantly affect the Experience or travel to it, no penalty applies and we'll refund all payments made.

Refunds are issued by the same method as the original payment.

About B2B

Can PhotoPills design a mission for our company or clients?

Yes. We design missions for luxury travel partners, corporate teams, client relationships, and brand activations. Every B2B mission is built on the same foundation as our B2C Experiences: computed moments, precise positions, honest outcomes. The brief changes. The philosophy doesn't.

How do we start a partnership conversation?

Tell us what you're trying to create: for whom, for what occasion, and what extraordinary would mean in that context. We'll take it from there.
